The Camera You Have

is an ongoing series of prints made by photographer Clayton Hauck during his years of exploration — an ode to those moments that happen organically as life unfolds. Each month (or so!), a new print will be added to the series and available for purchase either mounted or framed in a high quality, hand made, small run, signed & numbered, limited edition.

0014 “Just Desert”

THE STORY At the very tail end of a trip to Arizona with my sister, I made a visit to Phoenix’s Desert Botanical Garden to kill some time before heading to the airport. The place is beautiful and, while I love desert landscapes generally, Phoenix is not one of my favorite places despite a few redeeming qualities such as the existence of this beautiful place. That said, considering I am a lifelong Chicagoan, it’s highly likely I will one day call Phoenix home since it serves as the unofficial retiring place of most Chicagoans. Until then, it’s just desert.

0013 “Parking Lot Pigeons”

THE STORY Pulling into the PetSmart parking lot off Elston Avenue in need of cat food for my beloved Gwen, I noticed this pack of pigeons hanging out on the pavement. I stopped my Focus in its tracks while reaching for the iPhone and snapped a series of a few images in a sequence, capturing the center pigeon at the perfect moment.

0012 “Monkey Business”

THE STORY If you’ve been to the Sacred Monkey Forest in Bali, Indonesia, you know it’s quite a scene. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure: imagine a forest filled with wild monkeys of all shapes, sizes, and levels of aggression, trained to be unafraid of humans while battling amongst their own kind for territorial control of the easy-target tourists’ endless tasty treats. Hold an arm out with some snacks and you’ll have a monkey climbing up your torso in no time while another monkey slips off your sandal and holds it as ransom. Not even exaggerating, which is why I like this relatively serene scene as a more fond memory of the experience.

0011 “Dune Man”

THE STORY We set out pre-sunrise towards Liwa UAE to climb what might be the world’s tallest sand dune which sits quite literally in the middle of nowhere, near the border of Saudi Arabia, in what is known as The Empty Quarter. This area is popular for sand-based motor sports, however, on this morning we had the whole dune, and seemingly the whole desert, to ourselves. Side note: when climbing the world’s largest sand dune, bring water.

0010 “Winter Protest”

THE STORY The year was 2019 and our local football squad had just been eliminated from the playoffs leaving fans demoralized, and, lacking anything else to do, a local brewery held a kicking competition so fans could prove “dey woulda made da kick.” Alas, as I sat in a warm bar watching the competition on my phone with 5k other bored Chicagoans, I snapped a photo of these three fine folks across the street who were out in protest on this cold, winter afternoon — not of the Bears organization and their inept management, surprisingly.

0009 “Night Grid”

THE STORY As a lifelong Chicagoan, its a comforting sight when this all-too-familiar grid of lights comes into view as your plane prepares for landing. While its an efficient city design, the monotonous grid mixed with flat-as-a-pancake terrain gives Chicago a boring base-aesthetic which it fights to combat in other colorful ways. One upside to this uniformity is that at night, from above, it has a magical techno glow in which all lines lead downtown.

0008 “Dubai Twist”

THE STORY Dubai is a wild place: a desert oasis quite literally, filled with some of humanity’s more wild creations of recent vintage. Among the many feats of engineering is Cayan Tower, a 75-story skyscraper designed by Chicago’s SOM, which if it were in almost any other city in the world would stand out and become the dominant focal point, while in Dubai is goes almost unnoticed. One of my favorite buildings, it was awesome to gaze up in person at its presence.

0007 “Best Things Are Freaks”

THE STORY This one goes out to my sister Haley! To be honest, I always thought she was the creative one and kinda got into this whole photography thing because of her. We were on a trip together (Siblingsgiving!) exploring Arizona in 2019 when, as we stopped to fill up the gas tank at a creepy Circle K station, she noticed this tag which perfectly summarized Bisbee… and then I copied her and grabbed this sweet pic before we drove off. Thanks, Haley! 😛

0006 “Mad Cat”

THE STORY We used to feed a similar looking stray so I was extra curious when I came across this cat on a jog during covid. Using the camera I had, I made two photos of him, one being magical — or “Capital A Art” as Elisse says. Don’t take my word for it, this cat is special!

If this special feline belongs to you, be sure to hit me up and claim your free print as a thank you!

0005 “Dogs of Rio”

THE STORY The cat sneaks past a pack of dogs as their aggravated walker attempts to keep things orderly. This is a classic street photography moment captured thanks to the camera I had and showcasing some of Brazil’s amazing colors and textures. Rio is really one of the world’s most amazing cities and one I will surely revisit later in this series with some other memorable prints.

Hot tip when visiting Rio: be sure to grab a bite and a drink at Galeto Sat’s — easily one of my favorite meals anywhere.

0004 “Oaxaca Shoes”

THE STORY Oaxaca is a magical place and among my favorite spots on earth. While on a trip with friends celebrating my 40th birthday, I dipped into a fancy hotel bar with my buddy Jack for a cocktail across the street from the main square and while contemplating world geopolitics and US elections, snapped the series of three images which culminated my favorite of the bunch.

There’s maybe nothing better that wandering a Mexican town on a hot day, sipping cold drinks and enjoying fresh tacos.

0003 “Bleacher Gulls”

THE STORY The year was 2016 and the Cubs hadn’t yet won the World Series, but on a cold April day, I ventured to the park and took in a game which resulted in a big Cubs win. The weather was so cold that most fans packed up and headed out early, which allowed the sea gulls to move in and devour the leftovers.

0002 “Lagoon Roller Coaster”

THE STORY I love roller coasters and will jump at any opportunity I have to ride one not yet conquered. This photo was made in 2017 on an afternoon trip to a quaint amusement park outside of Salt Lake City, Utah home to the aptly named Roller Coaster, one of the world’s oldest operating roller coasters, built in 1921, partially destroyed by a fire in 1953, rebuilt and still thrilling riders to this day!

0001 “Summer Street”

THE STORY It all started when we hosted an art show at the studio in August of 2023. This sparked a realization that I’d been neglecting photography-for-the-sake-of-art for far too long. Instagram, once my outlet for personal photography, had morphed into something more commercial and lacking in uniqueness. It only made sense to dig through my archives of more casual, fun, candid, colorful and make physical prints, with the help of a great print shop downstairs from us called Loupe, and offer them available for people to purchase and hang in their homes.

“Summer Street” was a beautiful moment captured on 4th of July in summer 2018 and, I think, perfectly captures a vibe of summer in Chicago.
